Professional Collaboration

Joined-up working when several professionals are already involved with a child.

When a child is already seeing several professionals, the most useful contribution is often coordination rather than another separate opinion. Professional Collaboration provides specialist developmental input that fits alongside the work already happening.

For families whose child already has other professionals involved, and for paediatricians, GPs, therapists and psychologists seeking specialist developmental input.

Reasons families ask about this

  • Several professionals are involved and their recommendations do not always join up.
  • A referring professional wants a specialist developmental perspective.
  • A child's support plan needs coordinating across home, school and health.
  • Another service has identified developmental needs that fall within this practice's scope.

How it works

  1. Referral or enquiry

A professional or family gets in touch and outlines what is already in place.

  2. Consent and information sharing

Appropriate consent is confirmed before any information is shared.

  3. Specialist input

Developmental input is provided in the form most useful — written advice, a meeting, or assessment.

  4. Joint planning

Recommendations are agreed with the other professionals involved rather than issued separately.

What it may include

  • Written developmental advice for the wider team
  • Attendance at multidisciplinary or team-around-the-child meetings
  • Specialist developmental assessment contributing to a wider picture
  • Liaison between health, education and family
  • Clarification of what falls within and outside this practice's scope

What you receive

  • Written specialist input for the referring professional
  • Shared recommendations agreed across the team
  • Clear articulation of scope and boundaries
  • An agreed plan for who does what
