Developmental Movement Therapy

Individual sessions using movement and play to support participation, confidence and everyday skills.

Developmental Movement Therapy draws on Swiss and French psychomotricity. It uses movement, play and relationship to support the connections between the body, emotions, attention and learning — so that everyday activities become more accessible.

For children whose movement, coordination, body awareness, regulation or confidence is getting in the way of taking part in everyday life.

Reasons families ask about this

  • Your child avoids physical play, or finds it harder than other children of the same age.
  • Everyday tasks like dressing, handwriting or moving around a busy space take a lot of effort.
  • Your child seems to have lost confidence and gives up quickly.
  • Big feelings and a busy body make it hard for your child to settle into activities.

How it works

  1. Starting point

We begin from a consultation or assessment so that sessions are shaped around your child's actual profile.

  2. Shared goals

We agree goals with you, and with your child where appropriate, based on everyday participation rather than abstract skills.

  3. Regular sessions

Individual sessions, typically weekly, using movement, play and graded challenge.

  4. Review

Progress is reviewed with you at agreed intervals, and the plan is adjusted.

What it may include

  • Movement-based activities graded to your child's current ability
  • Work on body awareness, balance, coordination and spatial organisation
  • Support for regulation through movement, rhythm and pacing
  • Play-based activities that build confidence and willingness to try
  • Parent involvement and ideas to carry into everyday routines
  • Liaison with nursery or school where this would help

What you receive

  • An individual intervention plan with agreed goals
  • Ideas and strategies for home
  • Periodic review of progress against those goals
  • Written recommendations for school where relevant

What this service does not provide

Therapy supports development and participation. It does not promise a particular outcome or timescale, and it is not a treatment for a medical condition. Where physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy or medical input is needed, we will say so and work alongside those services rather than in place of them.

How many sessions will my child need?

This depends on your child's goals and profile. We agree an initial block and review it together rather than committing you to an open-ended course.

Do I stay in the room?

It varies by child and by goal. We discuss this with you and revisit it as therapy progresses.
